Why should this person or animal be a PetPartners Animaltarian of the Year?
Some people are born to save animals. Candy Brown is one of them - a true definition of an Animaltarian. In 2011, Candy began volunteering at Wayside Waifs as a Dog Socializer, interacting with shelter dogs. She soon added the volunteer roles of adoption counselor and joined Wayside’s FEMA certified Rescue Team.Candy assisted the ASPCA with rescues across the nation including cat hoarding in Florida and Hurricane Sandy relief. But it was a multi-state dog fighting ring that changed her life. One of the 80 survivors came to Wayside for rehabilitation. Candy named her Chetana. Candy sat with Chetana for hours, talking quietly and singing You Are My Sunshine every day. A year later, she was adopted. Shortly after, Chetana escaped from the home and was hit by a car. Chetana experienced compassion and love she didn’t know existed. Chetana is one of thousands of dogs that Candy has helped. To date, she has dedicated more than 3,500 hours to help those who cannot speak for themselves.
If this person or animal was selected, what would they do with the $5,000?
Because of Chetana's heartbreaking death, Wayside Waifs would like to purchase GPS tracking collars for dogs in foster care so if they escape like Chetana, foster families can quickly locate them and bring the animal back to safety. For Candy, this would be a special way to honor Chetana's memory.
