National Puppy Day

If you look hard enough, you can find something to celebrate every day of your 365 day year!  From National Read Across America Day aka Dr. Seuss’s birthday to National Bavarian Crepes Day,

National Puppy Day was founded in 2006 by Colleen Paige who is credited with saying, “Puppies are the most trusting and joyous creatures on the planet.  Oh, to be more like a puppy.”  Isn’t that the truth!  I can still remember the day we brought our sweet little Summer home, and she crashed out in my lap, belly up and legs dangling, exhausted from the adventure of being claimed as ours.  We called her our baby, held her while she slept, and took her to puppy daycare (aka my husband’s parents).  She was totally trusting of us, and totally thrilled with life.  She had it pretty good, after all.

Why celebrate National Puppy Day?

  • They love unconditionally, we can show them a little extra love on this day too!

  • Puppies are naturally curious and energetic little guys.  They love attention!

  • It encourages adoption.  This day brings awareness to shelters that are busting at the seams with puppies needing good homes.

On National Puppy Day, what can you do to celebrate?

  • Love your pup! Scratch his tummy, take him swimming, play catch.  Do whatever he likes to do most.  Check out our post, Love Your Pet Day for more ways to love on your puppy.

  • Take him for a walk.  See 3 Reasons to Get Outside and Walk for the benefits of walking, for your pooch and for you.

  • See Paige’s Tips For a Happy Puppy to learn more about topics such as choosing the right breed, teething, and exercising your pup.

  • Use Petfinder’s  Animal Shelters and Rescues search tool to find shelters in your area.  This is a great time to honor the hard work and time these organizations invest in finding forever homes for homeless animals.  Adopt a puppy as your own, or just give one some much needed rubs and loves.

  • Consider adopting a dog! If you have decided to adopt, make sure to check out pet insurance coverage to keep your pet healthy without breaking the bank!

  • Tune in to The Today Show (NBC) on March 23 between 9 and 10 EST to see how they will be celebrating National Puppy Day.

  • Use #NationalPuppyDay when posting on social media.

I can’t wait to see how you celebrate National Puppy Day.  Maybe this is your day to rescue a pup and give him the loving, forever home he has always wanted!
